Since the first COP in 1995 in Berlin, civil society has been associated with the negotiation process as observers. But this year, in Copenhagen, the UNFCC secretary wants to kick civil society out.
Over the past week NGOs, associations and independent medias worked hard inside the Bella Center to put pressure on negotiators and push them to sign an ambitious and legally binding agreement. Thousands of mainly young people from all over the world committed themselves to this hard work and now we expect results.
But UNFCC and the Danish organizers want to put an end to this participation. Since Thursday, only 90 (yes, 90!) people from civil society will be allowed inside the Bella Center. On Friday there will be no NGOs allowed in.
Are we really so terrifying? Do they want to kick us out in order to complete their “business as usual” job?
It’s unacceptable and goes against UN values and procedures.
Let’s take action.
